Once again, Cindi Emond, our "CCR Vatican Specialist," has organized an exclusive visit to a fascinating site within the Vatican City. Thanks to the kindpatronage of the Ambassador of Canada to the Holy See, Madam Anne Leahy, wewill be admitted to the archeological excavations of the Via Triumphalis Necropolis, which is currently closed to the generalpublic. The Vatican Museums are graciously offering this tourto us in recognition of the role of the Canadian Patrons; this benefit is reflected in the special low price of this event for members in good standing.

Fortuitously discovered in 2003 during works to build theSanta Rosa parking lot, inside the Vatican City, the Via Triumphalis necropolisis a precious addition to archeological understanding of Roman Imperial burial rites,especially for the lower and middle classes, in addition to those of the veryrich. The Via Triumphalis linked Rome with the Etruscan city of Veio and wasgiven its name due to the triumphal parades that took place along it.

Called “Little Pompei” by some enthusiasts, thishighly-regarded site includes 250 tombs, in the space of just 500 squaremeters, and the assortment of sarcophagi, tombstones, engravings, sculptures, stelae,and altars is astounding. Visitors can directly see the context of these itemsbecause, after having been restored, they were returned to the tomb locationsin which they were discovered instead of being put in a separate museum building.This creates an innovative, organic necropolis-museum. Many of the tombs werediscovered in an excellent state of preservation and can be dated to theAugustan age (27 B.C. -14 A.D.) and the age of Constantine (306-337 A.D.). Somebuildings have frescoes and stuccoes on their walls and there are a number of interestingmosaic floors.

Update for CCR members from the Wakefield Grannies

The Wakefield Grannies, who were the CCR charity-of-choice during the last club year, have sent an update to our members.

Dear CCR members in Rome,

We, the Grannies in Wakefield wanted to send you a little update on what we are up to. You will remember that in September 2010 you were kind enough to host us with the help of Air Canada. We had a wonderful time in Rome with you all and have fond memories of our trip.

As you know the Wakefield Grannies have committed to supporting a small group in Natal, South Africa in addition to our 40 Gogos (grandmothers) in Alexandra Township. We became aware of them when they drove for 8 hours to come to a hospice in Soweto to pick up mealie pap (a corn porridge which is a staple in the African diet). Since then we have sent them small amounts of money to help with food and transportation to medical appointments. In South Africa a little goes a long way. Your generous donations last year made a big impact and we will not forget the help of our fellow Canadians in Italy.

Our next challenge is to arrange to send two Wakefield Grannies to South Africa to assess the needs in our two groups. The original Alex Gogos have had the benefit of seven years of support and many of their grandchildren are now hoping to enter college or university. Stability and hope for the future are showing results in school success and goals for young people and we need to evaluate how best to maximize this development. We also believe that we need to have an on-site visit at least once every three years to ensure our ability to verify that all funds we send are used well. Of course as you know, "all money raised goes directly to help the women in South Africa" and that we have no administration costs. So we are facing a new challenge this year, how to fly two Wakefield Grannies to South Africa without having to use money already earmarked as part of our direct support? We will need to make a special appeal for help if any of you feel so inclined please let us know by visiting our web site: www.thegrannies.org

Cinecittà shows off, traces the History of Cinecittà:scenes, costumes, sets, characters – actors, directors, producers – all thatpassed throughThe Dream Factory.

Cinecittà has always been the place where one can make the immaterial becomereal, where authors and professionals can express themselves: going in with ascript and coming out with a finished film. All this is made possible by thestages and workshops where the entire production process is carried out, butabove all by the experience and expertise of all the people involved.

The exhibition intends to pay homage to those who helped make Cinecittà great,to all those working “behind the scenes” and contributing to the creation offilms with their talent and expertise.

The exhibition route reproduces every step of the film-making process, from thescript to the post-production stage, focussing on the jobs and skills of theprofessionals involved in producing the finished work. You will appreciate the skill of the costume designers and seamstresses inthe costume room along with the talent andcreativity of the set designers and craftsmen in the set room.

History of the Vatican Gardens

The circle of walls built by Leo IV in themid-ninth century formed the eastern bulwark of the popular suburb that grewup between the Tiber and St.Peter's and spread out behindthe basilica, along the top of the Mons Vaticanus, which formed the westernand southwestern boundary.

How the hilly area between the apse and the walls, todaya garden, was organized in the Middle Ages is unknown. It certainly was notbuilt upon, and it probably was largely uncultivated. It may have been justthis possibility of having a large garden (or more precisely, a protectedcultivated area) which made the Pope build his residence inthe Vatican.

For this purpose he acquired the hill, today occupied bythe Cortile di San Damaso and the palace of the Sixtus V, and theentire valley (which was later done over to form the Cortile delBelvedere and Cortile della Pigna), up to the outer slope of MonsSancti Egidi (the hill atop which Innocent VIII would buildthe Palazzetto del Belvedere at the end of the fifteenth century),extending the area of the Vatican to its natural boundaries on the north andnorthwest.

To protect his new acquisitions Nicholas builta sturdy circle of walls that joined up with the fortified enceinte of LeoIV. He brought water to the area, along with planted vines and fruit trees on thesite of the current Belvedere and pigna courtyards. Theslopes to the west remained wooded.

Architecture of the Gardens

Nicholas V (1447 - 55) was the first to conceive aseries of gardens that would have a practical application in the ceremonies ofthe papal court and that would also be used for the pope's personal enjoyment.He probably extended their area to the north of the tower that he had built toprotect Porta San Pietro (which for this reason was also calledPorta Viridaria or Garden Gate), along the Via Franchigena ,the medieval road connecting Rome with the North.

A contemporary writer describes a system of large andsmall gardens, fountains, a fish pool, and an enclosure for rabbits. Betweenthe tower and the palace, in the area now occupied by the Cortile diSan Damaso and the Palace of Sixtus V, lay the hortussegretus or private garden, the area closest to the palace, whichwas used for entertaining guests. At the end of a fifteenth century, a loggia wasbuilt to plans by Antonio del Peìlaiolo atop the boundary wallsat the north end of the gardens. The loggia, which overlooked the open countryoutside the walls, was called the Belvedere and was originallyconceived as a place where Innocent VIII could stop and rest duringhis walks. Later two small rooms were added on the east side to allow longerstays.

In the first decade of the sixteenth century,during the papacy of Julius II, Donato Bramante created a bold,theatrical plan for transforming the valley between the palace andthe Belvedere. He redesigned the valley to form three steppedterraces connected by staircases. (His design would later be broken up—first bythe Library of Sixtus V, and then by the Braccio Nuovo ornew wing of the Museums - to form the Cortili delBelvedere, della Biblioteca and della Pigna).

In place of NicholasIII's enclosure, Bramante built a great rectilineardefensive wall whose inner façade was elegantly adorned by superimposed blindarcades in conjunction wtih the covered galleries that linked the wall withthe palace, bridging the various levels of the garden. The uppermost gallery(the only one which corresponds to the present Cortile della Pigna) leddirectly from the papal residence to the Belvedere.

During the sixteenth century the lowest terrace(today the Cortile del Belvedere) was used for plays and receptions,whereas the upper terrace, especially the present day Cortile della Pigna,were kept as gardens and merged with the other gardens that stretched over thesite today occupied by the Pinacoteca, the Giardino Quadrato, andthe Pio-Clementine Museum.

The first phase of conversion of the MACRO wascompleted in 1999 with the restoration of the old plant design of the Peronibrewery, built in the early twentieth century on via Reggio Emilia, and it hasrecently been expanded by the leading French architect Odile Decq. The new wingof the building, with the entrance at the corner of via Nizza and via Cagliari,creates a dynamic balance, integrating the new structure into the district,putting the museum in dialogue with the city, offering the visitors and Romancitizens both the new exhibition and urban spaces, such as the large terrace,the parking, the library and the restaurant. Ernesto Neto's "While nothing happens"

Inspired by the constantflux of Contemporary Art, architect Odile Decq has proposed aself-contradicting edifice that strikes a dynamic balance, at once a point ofrupture generating conflict and creative instability while at the same timeestablishing a harmonious relationship with this ever-changing art, itselfconstantly tempting boundaries and resisting complacency. Decq’s building issituated on Via Reggio Emilia. Combined, the two buildings will occupy the fulldepth of the city block. By displacing the main museum entrance to the cornerof Via Nizza and Via Cagliari, Decq has opened up an area that was previouslyhidden. Typified by the insertion of street-level windows into some of theexhibition halls, Decq removes traditional boundaries and ignores dichotomousperceptions of public versus private, urban versus cultural existences. Thesite’s new identity is perhaps most evident in the multi-level rooftop garden.Visible from the top floor of the MACRO’s first building on Via Reggio Emilia,the garden will appear as a panoramic abstraction. Accessible from variouspoints within the museum, the roof will house a café and terrace seating, agarden and a point of intersection for visitors, artists, ideas, andadmiration. The project’s façade, angled on via Nizza and via Cagliari, will bean enunciation of the old and the new. The structure opens passages toarticulate the presence of the museum within the panorama of the street.Windows in the exhibition halls open onto the street revealing theinteraction between contemporary art and the city.

In January we're planning a special tour to an exclusive area of Vatican excavations, in addition to a return to the Rome Ice Club bar, to recreate the great fun we had in 2010.

After the warm welcome of our first guided wine-tasting of the season, we are now planning with master sommelier Daniele Maestri to have our second in February, 2012. We'll also be having another "CCR Now You’re Cooking" event titled "Comfort foods underpressure" to soothe your progress in the new year.

Itsmain feature is a wonderful model of the whole of Imperial Rome as it stood in4th century, as well as the unique plaster casts of the column of Trajan, whichyou can enjoy browsing through at really close range.

Including sumptuous baths,gardens, banqueting halls, an amphitheater, and possibly a tomb for his deadlover, the deified slave Antinuous, and recreations of famous sites the Emperorhad visited in Greece and Egypt, the Villa sheds some light on the life of oneof Rome's most famous and most secretive of Emperors.

Sunday, 13 November, 2011: Praeneste - Palestrina

Connected to Rome by the ViaPraenestina, the pre-Roman Praeneste was a flourishing hill town thanks to thehoracular temple of the goddess Fortuna Primigenia. The town fell under Romandomination and paid a very high price during the civil war when the city wascaptured and all its male citizens were slain in 82 BC. The spectacular remainsof its Hellenistic-style sanctuary are built upon the remains of the ancientcity and are now surmounted by a 17th-century palace built by the Barberinifamily, now a museum with wonderful exhibits.

Our Book Club is a greatway to find out about new books and to read and discuss them amongfriends.

This is how the BookClub works: the members suggest titles they are interested in reading, we pickone title a month and then meet for an informal discussion over a pot luckdinner the first Wednesday of every month. Dinners rotate through the member'shomes. We also bring books we do not want returned and swap them at ourmeetings.

Club members areresponsible for procuring their own copies of the book each month. This isour 7th yearrunning; you can find our past reading lists on the blog archived under CCR Resources whichreflect contemporary fiction from around the world. We read through about 8 titles a season with at least 2 comingfrom Canadian authors. Everyone is welcome but participation requiresreading the book chosen for the month.

Ambassador Anne Leahy in Guinea

FIAG Onlus "Federazione ItalianaAmici della Guinea" is a non-profit association which hasbeen active for over ten years in Guinea, West Africa. The aim of theassociation is to promote and implement micro-projects that willimprove the living conditions of Africans, especially in the areas ofhealth care and education. Sanitary and health conditions are appalling inthe country, with a life expectancy of less than 50 years and a mortalityrate of 90/1000 for children under one year old. Schoolingconditions are also very poor at all levels, ranging from dilapidatedstructures to a complete lack of equipment and didacticmaterial.

Over the years, FIAG has been ableto carry-out a number of projects. Our association has built asmall first-aid pavilion in a small village in the bush, rebuiltthe roof of a school, supplied desks and chairs for a kindergarten, duga well for a small village, subsidised schooling for promising students whosefamilies do not have sufficient financial means, funded surgicaloperations for children affected with oesophagus burns (after accidentallydrinking caustic acid), renovated a maternity ward in a hospitalof the capital, granted its first micro-credit to aseamstress school teaching a trade to unwed mothers, and so on.

FIAG currently has approximately 50members. Many have been able to witness the projects accomplished inGuinea through visits to the country and regular updates from itsPresident, Dr. Maurizio Bagarani, who currently lives and works as asurgeon in Guinea. The association vows that every cent collected goesdirectly to fund its projects without intermediary or operationalcosts. A locally-appointed project manager is responsible forproviding updates, pictures and financial reports.

Many more projects are being planned for thecoming year, some requiring us to team up with other associations (jointventures) in order to be able to secure sufficient means. Weare grateful to the Canadian Club of Rome and are confident that,with its support during this upcoming season, FIAG will be able to carry outmany worthy projects.

CCR’s Closing Cocktail - June 19, 2011

Summer Arrivederci Amongst the Stars

This year's closing cocktail event is sure to be one to remember! A rooftop patio in one of Rome's finest 5 star hotels.

One of the world's most beautiful terraces is to be found in Rome, at the Grand Hotel de la Minerve. This is no exaggeration, as it is in fact the only terrace to overlook the dome of the Pantheon in all its glory, from both a significant height and an impressive vicinity. Amongst the city’s many monuments, the dome of St. Ivo's Church, built by Borromini in 1642, and the roof terrace of the Quirinale are clearly outlined against the Roman sky. If instead one looks down into the square, one sees one of the great Bernini’s most curious works: a miniature elephant bearing an obelisk.

The stunning complex of the Grand Hotel de la Minerve was built in 1620 for the aristocratic Fonseca family, an important Roman family of Portuguese origin. Since the end of the 1700s the building has been used as a hotel.

Following the suspicious death of Baroness Audrey von Munchen, the fabulous von Munchen relics are to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. In the absence of a legal heir, it looks like all the proceeds will go to her favourite charity - unless a claimant comes forward at the last moment. What is the truth behind the Baroness’s death? There’s only one way to find out!

An auction as important as this one is bound to attract a wide range of guests. Apart from antique dealers and private collectors, you may also find prominent members of the Church, political activists, spies, assassins, and even the occasional drug dealer - as well as all of the Baroness’s ‘loyal’ staff. Take nothing for granted, however: not everyone is who they appear to be...

All those invited to this murder mystery are given a character in the plot. Although only one of them is the actual murderer, nearly everyone is a prime suspect. As guests arrive, they are greeted by the Baroness’s lawyer, Freddie Farr. The Treasure Hunt Game consists of two rounds. In the First Round, the teams walk through half the museum, identifying objects or images which could be used to create an imaginary civilization. For the Second Round, the teams walk through the second half of the museum, identifying objects or images which could be used to create a fantastic party. At the end of each round, the teams gather, and each team reports what they have found. After much laughter, they vote on the best civilization or party.

CCR Trip - Spring in Siena

With a history that reaches back to the time of the Etruscans, Siena rests in the heart of Tuscany. Famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice yearly, the centro storico of this incredible city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

And we’ll do it with a good old fashioned pot luck dinner. CCR member Jocelyne Albert has kindly offered to open her home for this event.

The wines of Puglia were relatively unknown until recently. During this session we will discover how old wine varieties combined with new technologies can produce excellence.

Daniele Maestri introduced us to rare reds as he compared Tuscan wines to French vintages at our last wine tasting.

Daniele Maestri, well-known Italian sommelier and a favorite among CCR members for his knowledgeable and lively presentations will lead this lecture and wine tasting. For those interested in ‘wining and dining’, Daniele is also one of the editors of “Due Mila Vini” a guide to Italian wines produced by Italian Sommelier Association.

Now You're Cooking - Cheesecake!!!!!

CCR President Diana Szyszka Pompei and CCR Paparazza Anna Ambrosini will be donning their baker’s garb to lead a home-style lesson on preparing and decorating cheesecakes.

As a cheesecake is prepared and baked during the lesson, the small group of participants will be let in on the simple secrets of making great cheesecakes. We will also learn a range of techniques for decorating cheesecakes (and other cakes) and savour the different cheesecakes previously prepared by our instructors. Everyone will receive a set of their treasured and well-tested recipes – not to mention a chance to eat their fill of delicious cheesecake!

Visitors can admire over 150 works – statues, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, tapestries and more. All bring to life more than 500 years of the building's history - from its days as a Renaissance Palace until its present life as the Embassy of France - a roll it has served for the past 135 years.

Though the Farnese family is long gone this exhibition brings together many works from the Farnese collection that are ‘coming home’ once again.

The Good Old Hockey Game

The Hockey Club Mentana (HCM) is inviting all Canadians, and friends, to their two final games of the regular Serie ‘C’ season in Mentana on the weekend of March 12 and 13. These two games will be against the ‘Bulldogs’, an ice-hockey club from Tor Felice (Torino) from northern Italy. It’s a win or lose situation! If HCM wins both games, the club will be in the playoffs to be held in northern Italy at the end of March.

There are sixteen teams in the Serie ‘C’ ice hockey league managed by the hockey federation of Italy. HCM is the only team existing south of Bologna. It has won all but one of its regular season games and is now well-positioned to go to the finals.

Much of HCM’s success is due to the efforts of their Canadian coach, Robert (Bob) Wakefield, who, over the last two years, has taken the team from a ragtag pickup hockey club to a well-organized, skilled and dedicated group of hockey players. CCR member Paul Ares, another Canadian and one of the former HCM pickup hockey players, is assistant coach.

On Sunday, 13 March, the game is from 12:30 to 15:30

Mentana and its hockey club have a special connection to Canada. The Bar at the rink is called ‘Canadiens’ and is decorated with hockey souvenirs from the Montreal Canadiens, as well as from other Canadian hockey teams. Overlooking the rink is a pizzeria/pub where the homemade pizza and fresh beer brewed in large vats on the premises draw a regular crowd of locals.

Join us to cheer on this great group of guys who have embraced one of our National sports with enthusiasm and that great sense of Italian brio.

Latin Dance Workshop - CCR Event

Though those hot sultry nights may seem a bit far away as we look at the thermometer in February, CCR member Parth Thakkar has a plan to start a tropical heatwave and get our temperatures rising. An expert in Latin dance Parth will be offering a workshop in the rhythms of Latin America for CCR members and friends.

Ottawa Youth Orchestra - A Canadian Event of Interest

The Ottawa Youth Orchestra is a symphony orchestra of sixty of the finest young musicians from Canada’s capital region. Under the leadership of Music Director John Gomez, the ensemble has become recognized as being one of the top youth orchestras in Canada.

Their mission is to provide high quality orchestra training and performance opportunities in a supportive musical environment. The orchestra will be visiting Italy from March 9 to 19, 2011 and will be performing 4 concerts here. The goal of the tour is to expose young Canadian musicians to the art and culture behind the Italian repertoire. Their Italy concert tour will include a performance here in Rome and Peter Egyed, CCR Member and Counsellor for Public Affairs, Culture and Academic Relations at the Embassy, has issued an invitation to CCR member to attend. The event is free but advance registration is required as space is limited.
