CCR Walks: Ostia Antica - September 28, 2019

Our first walk of the season will explore Ostia Antica and the secret of Rome’s success. Ostia’s ruins are a wonderful and still only partly excavated example of the bustling port cities which flourished under Roman rule in the Mediterranean. These ports were amazingly resilient places given their very unsanitary conditions and yielded immense wealth to the Empire. Ostia Antica is a perfect example of how these ports were set up and functioned, and provides ample material for us to get a good sense of what allowed the Roman Empire to last as long as it did. Join us as we explore Ostia’s infrastructure, discuss its social networks, and reveal the important role immigrants played in its success.
