In spite of fathering an illegitimate son, Cardinal
Altemps thought he had excellent chances to become Pontiff. His
wonderful palace, which we will explore, attests to his power,
influence, and appetite as a collector of ancient sculpture. Join us
as we learn about the Cardinal’s life, his palace, (including recent
excavations that have revealed remains of a Roman domus, medieval
fortifications and part of a medieval house), his ambitions, and his
wayward son (who ended up being beheaded for kidnapping and raping a
woman). Heartbroken by his son’s death, the Cardinal is believed to
have commissioned the palace chapel decoration as a memorial to what he
felt was a terrible injustice.
