We're starting a new Opera Appreciation series. These one-off classes will provide an opportunity to get together with others who would like to have a greater understanding of the various aspects which combine to form a particular work (opera) of lirica, the originally Italian genre of classical music theatre. Who knows... from an entusiasta della lirica, you could become a true melòmane (a fervent opera-lover)!
The morning class will be held in the home of NYC-native Maestro Joseph Giardina who was, for many years, the Chorus Master at the Teatro dell'Opera here in Rome. He is also a vocal coach and has tutored many of the world’s leading singers. During the class we'll watch a recent performance and Maestro Giardina will discuss the plot with us and explain aspects of the orchestration and libretto.
Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte) has been chosen for the first class. It is the last opera by Mozart and was conducted by him at its premiere on the 30th of September in 1791.
