CCR Walks: Montesacro - November 28, 2015

If you were to rely on guidebooks, you would think Rome consisted only of its "Centro Storico." However, Rome's remarkable expansion in the last 40 years has meant most of its citizens live in areas quite removed from the historical centre. While conservation concerns have ensured this area is the focus of admiration, it is the "periferie" (suburbs and outskirts) and their development that help explain modern Rome, its recent history and maybe also its future.

Let's take a look at Montesacro, the neighbourhood which sprang up outside the walls following the storming of Rome by the Piedmontese in September 1870.
