If you were to rely on guidebooks, you would think Rome consisted only of
its "Centro Storico." However, Rome's remarkable expansion in the last
40 years has meant most of its citizens live in areas quite removed from the
historical centre. While conservation concerns have ensured this area is the
focus of admiration, it is the "periferie" (suburbs and outskirts) and their development that help
explain modern Rome, its recent history and maybe also its future.
Let's take a look at Montesacro, the neighbourhood which sprang up outside
the walls following the storming of Rome by the Piedmontese in September 1870.
