The CCR Book Club's first reading of the new year will be "The Optician of Lampedusa" by BBC reporter Emma Jane Kirby. This extended description of the often tragic flow of desperate migrants towards Europe via the Italian isle of Lampedusa, just 70 miles north of the African coast, is laid out through the experience of one local resident who, along with family and friends, unexpectedly found himself striving to save as many migrants as possible from a horrific death in the Mediterranean. The Guardian review describes it as "an ambitious and important book that goes far beyond the voyeurism of 24-hour news to identify something timeless and troubling."
