Guest Speaker: Chef Jessica Rosval - January 5, 2022

At the age of 35, Montreal-born Jessica Rosval has been named Chef of the Year by L’Espresso 2021 and her Take It Easy Sunday Brunch was recognized as Best Brunch 2022 by 50 Top Italy Luxury. Jessica is Chef the Cuisine at Casa Maria Luigia, the guesthouse that Chef Massimo Bottura and his wife Lara Gilmore opened in the Emilian countryside, while remaining in charge of the kitchen for events through Osteria Francescana, Bottura’s three-Michelin-star restaurant in the heart of Modena. Rosval also finds time to help migrant women develop new job skills for the Italian market with the Association for the Integration of Women, which she co-founded at the beginning of 2020.

This Q&A session will be moderated over Zoom by Rome-based Canadian foreign correspondent Megan Williams. Please send your questions for Jessica to us in advance so that we can organize them appropriately.

Guest Speaker: Canadian Wheat for Italian Pasta - February 26, 2020

Jennifer Fellows, the Trade Commissioner for agriculture, processed foods, fish and seafood at the Embassy of Canada in Italy, will provide us with a short overview of the ups and downs of the century-old pasta relationship between Canada and Italy, including some current controversies.

There will be a Q&A opportunity, followed by light refreshments.

CCR Talks: Artemisia, A Woman Painter in a Man’s World - January 13, 2017

Arguably the best-known female painter of her time recognized today, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656) is equally renowned for a notorious trial concerning her rape, at age 18, by Agostino Tassi, a well-established colleague of her father, the painter Orazio Gentileschi. This incident inspired a number of novels and films. Despite this scandal early in her life, her painting career took off. During her lifetime, she traveled to Florence, Genoa, the English court and Naples and exerted a remarkable influence on a whole generation of painters. A recently opened exhibition at Palazzo Braschi, focusing on her work and influence, will be on until 8 May 2017. It charts Artemisia's career as a follower of Caravaggio, and compares her work to that of other followers of the ill-fated genius.

We take this opportunity to offer a lecture on Artemisia for those who would like a bit more information on the artist and her struggle for recognition before viewing the exhibition. This lecture will be accompanied by a potluck dinner to which all attendees will be asked to make a contribution.

CCR Talk & Aperitivo: Children's Bilingual Language Development - October 2, 2015

Myths and Strategies: Children's Bilingual Language Development 

This interactive talk will discuss some of the common myths parents, teachers, and professionals hold about bilingual language development in preschoolers. For example: Do children learning two languages show a language delay? Is language mixing a cause of concern? Is it better to learn a second language after age 3, when the first language has been acquired? Is perfect bilingualism achievable? What happens to language dominance if we move to another country? How can I best maintain my child's two (or three) languages? Recent research has suggested answers to these questions. In addition, strategies parents, teachers, and other professionals can use for helping children develop one or more languages will be described, with an emphasis on fostering bilingualism.

Luigi Girolametto is a Full Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology, Faculty of Medicine,

at the University of Toronto. His recent research focuses on bilingual language development in children between 2½ and 5 years of age. The children in his studies speak over 40 different languages in the home, reflective of Toronto's multicultural mix. In Rome, Italy, Luigi is working with Dr Cristina Caselli at the CNR, Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, as a consultant to a screening project to determine language delay in 2 year olds. With his colleagues, he is developing a shared book reading intervention (in English and Italian) that can be used for families of children with a delay in vocabulary acquisition.
