CCR House Concert: Crozman & Milatz - February 20, 2024

We have the unique opportunity to meet and enjoy the art of two young Canadian classical musicians in the intimate setting of a private residence during their tour of Italy. It goes without saying that spots are strictly limited for this home concert, reminiscent of the private salons of the past. Refreshments will be provided; CCR members have priority.

Named “Canada’s next big cello star” by CBC Music, Canadian cellist Cameron Crozman leads an active performing career as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada, the USA, and Europe. Winner of the 2021 Canada Council for the Arts Virginia Parker Prize, Cameron was CBC/Radio-Canada’s 2019 Classical Revelation artist and a laureate of the Paris Conservatoire and Gautier Capuçon’s Classe d’Excellence at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. He plays on a c. 1750 cello by Gennaro Gagliano, generously on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Instrument Bank.

Meagan Milatz is “a remarkable pianist with a seemingly limitless palette of expression” (Le Devoir). An accomplished soloist and chamber musician, she has appeared with orchestras across Canada and performs regularly with top international musicians such as Stefan Dohr, Matt Haimovitz, Øystein Baadsvik, Avi Avital, Cho Liang Lin, and Andrew Wan, and she has performed internationally in Ireland, France, Scotland, Spain, and the USA.

CCR Day Trip: Anzio - May 18, 2019

Off we go to seaside Anzio, famous for having been the holiday home of Emperor Nero and for the landing of Allied troops during WWII. Our day out will include visits to the museums of archeology and of the liberation landing, to Nero’s villa and grottoes, and to the ports and beach.

Our gourmet inclinations will be satisfied with tastings at a local wine bar, lunch at a private seaside home, and a gourmet ice-cream stop before heading back to Rome!

Whether you choose to join the group on an easy train ride from Termini station or meet directly in Anzio after coming in your own car, this outing promises to be a real treat.

Transportation and timing: Visit starts at 9:30 at Anzio train station. By train: meet the group at Rome Termini station to take the 8:12 train (final destination Nettuno; €3.60 each way) for 11 stops to get to Anzio at 9:15; train back to Rome at 5 pm. By private car: parking lot available next to Anzio train station but be aware there’s often heavy traffic on the Pontina and Nettunense roads to get there. Ground transportation within Anzio will be provided.

CCR Wine Tasting: Aglianico from Campania, Basilicata and Puglia - February 13, 2016

Full-bodied and richly-textured, Aglianico is the primary red grape of Campania, Basilicata and parts of Puglia, and is considered by many to be one of the best red wines of Italy. On our first tasting of the season, we will compare aglianicos from the two top DOC regions of Taburno and Vulture. And our sommelier plans to introduce a few non-aglianico surprises from these regions. At the end of the tasting we will share appetizers, a light dinner and enjoy ‘les fonds de bouteilles’.

CCR Pink BRA Day Aperitivo - October 20, 2015

Once again the Canadian Club of Rome and friends are ready to be part of a worthy cause! BRA Day... "Did you say bra?!" Yes, BRA stands for Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, a worldwide day to raise awareness of breast cancer and recovery. Started by Toronto doctor Mitch Brown, BRA Day has been adopted in Italy and many other countries. 

So, let’s get together for a great aperitivo at VOY and expect to have a LOT of fun! Not only fun and games but guest speakers to keep us up to date. Don't forget to wear a little or a lot of PINK! It's all for a great cause. And bring a friend along. RSVPs are a must.

What in the world is generating all this excitement?!

Since starting in 1993 from its base in Old Montreal, Cirque Éloize has been at the forefront of the renewal of circus arts, emphasizing skill and generating wonder. Director Jeannot Painchaud brings together fourteen artists representing thirteen circus disciplines in his newest show, iD, a spectacle that incorporates acrobatics, dramatic staging, music and urban dance.

The Canadian Club of Rome has secured 16 prime seats (row 21) at the special price of €40 rather than the regular €55. Priority will be given to current CCR Members for these tickets. Those wishing to have an aperitivo beforehand can join our group at Panella-L'Arte del Pane for a drink and snacks.

By the way,  éloize means "heat lightning" in Acadian French, or éclair de chaleur in Standard French!

CCR Holiday Season Party - December 16, 2014

The Canadian Club of Rome is holding its 2014 holiday party at Casa Bleve, one of Rome's most famous enoteca-restaurants, equally renowned for its wine and its food. Members and friends can enjoy aperitivi and a delicious sit-down dinner with wine in Bleve's elegant covered cortile with its stained glass ceiling. This is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the year coming to an end and share plans for 2015. Space is limited, so please reserve early to avoid disappointment.

Menu -  a variety of fresh antipasti,  a hot primo with funghi porcini, a selection of Italian cheeses with marmellate, holiday desserts, coffee.

Saturday, 8 October, 2011: Museo della Civiltà Romana 
Set in the modernist EUR neighbourhood, the wonderful, if slightly eery, museum of Roman Civilization was built in 1942 to celebrate Emperor Augustus (and his modern-day epigone, Benito Mussolini). Today its unlikely futuristic setting often appears in adverts and assorted films. This museum is a must for anyone wishing to appreciate the many facets of Roman civilization. Its main feature is a wonderful model of the whole of Imperial Rome as it stood in 4th century, as well as the unique plaster casts of the column of Trajan, which you can enjoy browsing through at really close range.

Saturday, 22 October, 2011: Villa Adriana

At a comfortable distance from bustling Rome, Emperor Hadrian built a wonderful residence for himself. 1800 years later, its remains, still partly unexcavated, form a splendid archaeological site which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Including sumptuous baths, gardens, banqueting halls, an amphitheater, and possibly a tomb for his dead lover, the deified slave Antinuous, and recreations of famous sites the Emperor had visited in Greece and Egypt, the Villa sheds some light on the life of one of Rome's most famous and most secretive of Emperors.

Sunday, 13 November, 2011: Praeneste - Palestrina

Connected to Rome by the Via Praenestina, the pre-Roman Praeneste was a flourishing hill town thanks to the horacular temple of the goddess Fortuna Primigenia. The town fell under Roman domination and paid a very high price during the civil war when the city was captured and all its male citizens were slain in 82 BC. The spectacular remains of its Hellenistic-style sanctuary are built upon the remains of the ancient city and are now surmounted by a 17th-century palace built by the Barberini family, now a museum with wonderful exhibits.

Saturday, 26 November, 2011: Lecture: Filippino Lippi and Botticelli

Imitated, admired, venerated, these two painters lived and worked in 15th-century Florence and helped to shape the way we think of the Renaissance. This lecture with slideshow is aimed at those who wish to visit the exhibition taking place this season at the Scuderie del Quirinale and is of interest, more generally, to anyone interested in the historical context in which Renaissance Florentine painting developed.

Historic Walks - 2010-2011

We are very pleased to announce that our own Olivia Ercoli is able to recommence her popular walk series a little earlier than expected. She has prepared an exciting season of rambles through Rome that has something to appeal to all our members and friends of all ages.

The new series of walks focuses on themes of current interest in Italy and things Italian: the celebration of Italy's 150 years of Unification (1861 - 2011), the London exhibition of Raphael cartoons for the Sistine Chapel Tapestries (ending 17 october 2010), as well as traditional celebrations held in the city in November and December.


Sunday, 24 October: The Story of the Roman Republic of 1849
Follow the impetuous charges of Garibaldi’s volunteers in their desperate bid to defend the Roman Republic against the French troops led by General Oudinot. Learn about the dramatic events of the life and times of one of Italy’s favourite heroes and his gallant companions, a story few Romans remember today.

Saturday, 13 November: Verano Cemetery and San Lorenzo fuori le mura
Traditionally, November in Italy is the month in which we commemorate the dead. The great cemetery of Campo Verano along the Via Tiburtina boasts a long history as a burial ground for the first Christians, close to the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura. First set up under Napoleonic Occupation, Verano cemetery increased in size and splendour up to the 20th century. Its many monuments help tell the story of the city of Rome, and the early phases of its new role as capital of modern Italy.

Sunday, 28 November: Raphael and Michelangelo at the Vatican
Trained in Florence and steeped in the love of antique art, the two great geniuses of the Renaissance were summoned to Rome by the energetic, domineering and visionary Pope Julius II (1503-1513). Nowhere else as in the Papal Palace and in St Peters' church does the rivalry and admiration, the intense exchange of ideas and their shared enthusiasm for antique art come to life. After the closing of the great London Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum on the Raphael tapestries and their genesis, we follow in their wake as we trace the origins of the collection and the influence of the antique works on the two Renaissance artists.

Saturday, 18 December: Roman festivities in the forum, a children's tour (adults also welcome).
The Forum with its temples and statues was the last refuge of the pagan gods as Christianity spread through the Eternal City. This walk takes you through the Roman Forum by retracing the pagan processions, festivities and ceremonies which were to be seen here at different times of the year. The memory of such festivals lives on in one of the city's most impressive archaeological sites.

The traditional Christmas Créche was turned into a form of art in Southern Italy during the 18th century. This walks links up some of Rome’s most spectacular examples and provides an insight into the origins of some of the traditional elements of Christmas traditions and customs.

Sunday, 30 January 2011: Il Vittoriano – The birth of a Nation
Also known as “the Type-writer”, “the Wedding Cake”, and “the Great Inkpot”, the Vittoriano, or Monument to Victor Emanuel II, was inaugurated in June 1911, to celebrate Italy’s fifty years of Unity. Since then it has been the focus of strong debate in architectural circles. After 17 years restorations the monument is now open to the public, supplying an insight into the contradictory and fascinating climate in which modern Italy took place.

A Season of Success

With the coming of June our CCR Season for 2009-2010 is starting to wind down. Many of our members are returning to Canada, some for vacations or to visit family or friends. Others, sadly for us, to return home after their time here in Rome. Many others are heading for various exotic and wonderful destinations around the globe as the warm weather heats things up here in the Eternal City.

We thought we'd take the next week or two to post highlights of the various and varied events that CCR members and friends took part in over the past 9 months. We'll be posting photos and a few words on things that have given us the opportunity to get together and, as we say on the side bar, live, laugh and love in Rome.
